The McLellan Award for Play Writing
Robert McLellan was born on the 28th January 1907, at his grandparents’ farm, Linmill, in Kirkfieldbank, Lanarkshire and it was boyhood holidays here which inspired his “Linmill Stories” and exerted a lifelong influence on all his work.
After an education at Bearsden Academy and Glasgow University, McLellan dedicated himself to writing in Scots, the living language of the communities he grew up in. His first play – the one act “Jeddart Justice” - was produced in 1933, followed swiftly by a full length play “Toom Byres” in 1936 and his best known masterpiece, “Jamie the Saxt” in 1937.
Few dramatists have matched Robert McLellan’s skill at deploying the vigorous vocabulary of Scotland and his language is a beautifully lyrical, witty and intelligent Scots of his own time. The McLellan Festival 2007 marked the centenary of this influential and seminal Scottish playwright's birth and the first Mclellan Award for Play Writing. We will continue to celebrate the work and legacy of Robert McLellan by inviting contemporary Scottish playwrights to enter for The McLellan Award 2008
The winning playwright will receive prize money of £1000 as well as the McLellan Award 2008 created by sculptor Marvin Elliot . The winning playwright will have the opportunity to workshop their play with Nutshell Theatre Company culminating in a performance reading at the Arran Arts Festival in November 2008 and a further performance in Oran Mor, Glasgow, in March 2009. |
