High Corrie rests on a raised beach on the lower slopes of Goatfell above the village of Corrie. It consists of a small clachan of nine cottages clustered together with their gables digging into the higher side of the slope against the prevailing wind. High Corrie and the village of Corrie below take their name from the corrie (high glen or hollow) higher up Arran's highest mountain, Goatfell. A clachan is a cluster of houses in the old Highland tradition of a collective for security and mutual assistance. The High Corrie houses have been rebuilt on the ruins of previously cleared clachan. The dates of reconstruction are unknown but may be about 1830's. The views are inspiring and the clachan remains unspoilt by planning. From the late nineteenth century till now the clachan has been a magnet for artisits, either as an inspirational place to work or as a venue for landscape painting. J Inglis |
