Arran On FilmArran Theatre and Arts Trust's 'Arran on Film' project developed from an idea to inspire people by revealing the lsland's past in moving image and to create a permanent legacy for the Arran Heritage Museum to support their extensive collections. The Arran Heritage Museum have a role as a secure donation point for archive film and where film content can be cross referenced with photographic collections and text sources. The first phase of the archive film compilation edit is now with the museum and screening arrangements are being made.
Edward O'Donnelly has worked professionally in film and video for broadcasters and within education for 25 years. In the past 8 years he has collaborated on video projects incorporating film from the National Library of Scotland's Scottish Screen Archive. These projects have included commissions from The National Museum of Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland as well a number of national cultural festivals.
As he has become more familiar with archive film collections, the idea of researching and compiling 'Arran on Film' took shape and through ATAT on the 8th September 2011,( see reviews) as part of this year's Mcl.ellan Arts Festival, the first screening of an edited compilation took place in front of a large enthusiastic audience at Corrie Hall. Film from many sources including the Scottish Screen Archive, The Imperial War Museum and individual families had been gathered and edited for the screening. There have already been requests from various local organisations for a screening.
It is the desire of ATAT that this project continues, as much more film is yet to be accessed and actually discovered. There is also an expressed willingness from a number of families and individuals to explore more closely the content of family film collections for items of general historic interest to the lsland.
An important aspect of the project work is to source the original film and where possible, have it converted to a high quality digital format, for ongoing digital storage and future transferability. Picture quality greatly enhances the actual viewing experience of an audience and digital transfer and restoration can provide an improvement to the original film.
In order to continue the project it is necessary to find funding support to up-grade equipment, cover direct costs and a support a proportion of time spent on the project.
