Wednesday 16th September:
Pot and Noodle: A wonderful pot pourri of music, dance ,drama and film from some of our most talented young people (: List of Events) followed by. ‘Seeker, Reaper’ a one-act play (running to just over 1 hour) by Eddie Stiven and Lachie Paterson. It tells of the life of a Ring-Net Fisherman, and evokes the traditions of the Inshore Herring Fishery that was pursued by these men in the West and North of Scotland, for many years up until the 1960’s. It tells of the boats, and their history, of the fishing gear, and the lore of the fishing. It includes live music and song, and is illustrated with short sequences of slides of old photographs and old film footage.Eddie Stiven is a playwright who has lived for the past twenty-three years in Glenelg in the West Highlands, although he is originally from South Ayrshire.
He is a former fisherman and for many years now has worked as a trainer in the Fishing Industry throughout the Highlands and Islands. He is also closely involved with the community-owned ferry, ‘The Glenachulish’ which plies between Glenelg and the Isle of Skye.
His plays are mostly written in Lowland Scots and notable productions of his work include ‘Tamlane’ (Theatre Alba), ‘The Bull Raiders’ (Scottish Youth Theatre) and ‘The Play o the Wather’ (Nutshell Theatre Company).
Lachie Paterson is a former fisherman from Carradale in Kintyre. He works as the Training Co-ordinator for the Fish Industry Training Association (Highlands and Islands).
- Lachie worked at the Ring Net as a young man. The old photographs of the men and boats are all from his personal collection, as are the clips of old film.
‘Seeker, Reaper’ is a project first dreamed up by Eddie and Lachie whilst they were working with fishermen on the Isle of Jura, although they were actually in the bar of the Isle of Jura Hotel (after a visit to the Distillery) when the idea came to them in a flash of light.
The character of the fisherman in the play is based on Jock Simson of Dunure in South Ayrshire who was born in the early Nineteen Hundreds. As recounted in the play, his career took him to America where he worked initially on a ranch with his elder brother, and then back at sea with the North Pacific Pelagic Fleet. His war service was served with the Royal Naval Reserve on Minesweepers.
The poem, ‘Seeker, Reaper’, which forms the last part of the play was written by George Campbell Hay in 1947. The boat in the poem may be based on the ‘Sireadh’ (Seeking), a Loch Fyne Skiff from the Thirties, but its subject is more generic.
Hay was a great linguist as well as a great poet, and was equally at home in Scots and Gaelic, both of which feature in the poem, as does Old Norse, the language of the Vikings.
The play, ‘Seeker, Reaper’, has been performed in various Fishing ports in the Highlands and featured recently in Radio 4 documentary on George Campbell Hay. In December 2008 ‘Seeker, Reaper’ was performed at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness. The Arran Community Theatre Lamlash. Review coming soon....
